MORNING WORKSHOP
9.00am – 12.00pm Manager's Guide to Lab Automation & Technology Management
Whether you are managing a research or testing/service laboratory, results are what matter. In 21st century labs, those results and ability to produce them rely on sophisticated informatics and automation systems. The effective deployment of those technologies depends, in turn, upon planning and the effectiveness of technology management. This is particularly true of LIMS and electronic lab notebook systems.
This workshop will give you the basis for:
- The effective, successful planning and development of laboratory automation and computing programs, including the determination of product requirements, selection, and implementation
- Helping you avoid cost over-runs and unrealistic schedules, and put your planning on solid footing
- It will also assist you in the development of effective working partnerships between Laboratory and Information Technology groups
Rather than approaching lab automation on a lab-by-lab basis, the Institutes methodology addresses entire lab facilities. By using common underlying policies for technology management and development, we encourage facility-wide deployment of applications [where possible/appropriate] and avoid the creation of technology silos. This workshop is particularly appropriate for senior management with responsibilities for multiple labs – the benefits of the workshop are better realized when common goals are instituted across an organization.
The benefits of the workshop include:
- Improving the effectiveness of automation systems, and their ability to be successfully implemented and supported
- Creating a basis for innovation in lab operations
- Improving the interaction between labs and company departments or customers that either need controlled access to reported data, or to submit information. Lab managers have to address both internal operational issues and the need to interact with customers and other corporate departments.
- Reducing laboratory operating costs, and improving Return On Investment in automation/computing technology
- Meeting the demands of regulatory agencies
- A basis for coordinating the work of IT groups, outside contractors & equipment vendors
- Protect / enhance the value of the labs intellectual property, and make the most effective use of people's talents.

AFTERNOON WORKSHOP
1.00pm – 4.00pm Integrating and operating ELN and LIMS in one Enterprise Laboratory Platform – The LabWare approach
LIMS and ELN technologies have been covered extensively in previous Smart Lab and other Lab Informatics conferences. LabWare, a major, global LIMS supplier, has been monitoring ELN developments for a number of years and has recently introduced an ELN application of its own. LabWare has taken the approach of providing ELN as a seamlessly integrated module of LIMS allowing current and future LIMS users to adopt ELN within a single Enterprise Laboratory Platform.
This workshop will explore the benefits and opportunities available to organisations intending to implement LIMS and ELN, within a single, integrated product platform as an alternative to purchasing separate products. The workshop will include application demonstrations and practical advice on how to set-up and get the best out of both technologies.
